My name is Kate and I'm 27. I grew up in Southern Ohio but spent most of my summers out here in New England w/ my family. I first discovered Reiki the March after Hurricane Katrina hit the southern part of the US. A group from my college had decided shortly after the disaster hit, to set up a trip for us to go and donate our time & services. I signed up right away, raised the money I needed, and looked forward to it. An AmeriCorps*VISTA group came with us, about 30 Ohio Univ students, we all piled in 2 vans and drove to the 9th ward of New Orleans, the most devastated part of the area. We stayed at Emergency Communities which, then, was set up not very far from where the levee broke. Electricity was generated, hot water came from sun panels on the shower stalls, we all slept in tents in "Tent City" & worked at various places/sites for a week. It was the most amazing experience of my life, and truly life-changing. I decided right away to volunteer in the First Aid/Red Cross/etc tent, which was right where I needed to be (it turns out). I knew basic first aid then and some massage; I figured I could help some how, if not just talk to people and hand out band-aids,tea, medicines & etc. Turns out I met some of the most amazing people ever (who I wish I was still in contact with) and one of them, a massage & Reiki practitioner from England, saw the same healing energy she worked with inside of me and right away took me under her wing. I also met a wonderful local guy who was a healer too (Marcus i miss you!) and we spent every day, all day, working together & talking about the greatest stuff imaginable. The rest of the week I helped with massages and Reiki, as well as learning about herbs, homeopathic medicine & similar ideas from a blind woman and her son, who were both healers. During that week I also volunteered twice to go to a local Buddhist temple to help clean up and paint. This is where my path started.
I never received *official* paperwork about being attuned in Reiki, but I knew that I was and that was all that mattered to me. It took me many years to get true Reiki II & III attunement, then a Master attunement as well. My primary focus is Usui Reiki but I do use some Tibetan as well. I have also been attuned in Reconnective Healing by one of my best friends, Shirley Tramm (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=642048742).
Otherwise, I have a Bachelor's degree in Women, Gender & Minority Studies (I developed it) from Ohio University, and am currently taking Therapeutic Massage classes at a local community college. I am First Aid & CPR certified. I plan to eventually get certifications in Reiki for Companion Animals and possibly other Reiki & Reconnective Healing techniques. Currently I live on Cape Cod with my fiancé & my chocolate lab,Moose.
